Privacy Policy

The ClipForensics extension helps you verify whether a video is authentic or AI-generated. It only ever acts when you click it. This policy explains exactly what it accesses, what it sends, and what it never does.

Single purpose

Let you check the authenticity of a video you are viewing, by submitting it to ClipForensics for a forensic scan. Nothing else.

What the extension accesses

  • The active tab’s URL — only when you open the popup, to detect whether you’re on a supported video page (Instagram, TikTok, X/Twitter, Reddit) and show the right actions.
  • The video you choose to scan — when you click “Grab & scan this clip”, the extension identifies the media URL the page loaded for the current video (via the browser’swebRequestAPI on the supported platforms and their content-delivery hosts) and fetches that video in your own browser session. It reads the video file only — never page content, comments, messages, or account data.

What it sends, and to whom

  • “Grab & scan this clip” → uploads the video file it fetched to the ClipForensics backend for analysis.
  • “Verify with ClipForensics” → sends the page URL to the ClipForensics backend, which fetches and analyses the video.

In both cases the request is authenticated using the session cookie from the ClipForensics website you are already signed in to — so the scan appears on your account. The extension never sees, stores, or transmits your password or any login credentials.

What the extension does NOT do

  • ✕Collect or transmit your browsing history
  • ✕Track which pages you visit
  • ✕Read page content, comments, messages, or account data
  • ✕Save any video to your device
  • ✕Run in the background when you’re not using it
  • ✕Inject ads or modify the pages you visit
  • ✕Store or transmit your credentials
  • ✕Act on non-supported websites
  • ✕Sell or share your data with third parties

Data storage & retention

The extension uses Chrome’s storage only for local preferences — no personal data is stored in the extension. Video submissions are handled by ClipForensics to produce your scan report, under the ClipForensics website privacy policy.
